What to expect
Document preparation, appointment availability and the authority's decision are separate stages. Don't quit your job, sell or give up your home, take children out of school, ship your belongings or pets, or book non-refundable travel until the visa is approved and in your passport. A visa can be refused or delayed.

Entry paperwork 5/5 · Fewer formalitiesDogs and cats: microchip, valid rabies vaccination and a USDA-endorsed EU health certificate before entry. Get an EU pet passport from a local vet after arrival.
Quarantine: None if the paperwork is in order.
A relative comparison of entry paperwork for dogs and cats travelling from the continental US: 5 means fewer formalities, 1 means more extensive preparation. It does not rate cost, animal welfare, airline availability or breed acceptance; no pet move is effortless.
Not every animal or breed can automatically travel. Other species, destination breed restrictions and transit rules need separate checks; airlines may reject breeds the destination permits.
Preparation: weeks to months* depending on existing records and flight availability. From the continental US, allow at least 21 days after a first rabies vaccination (after microchipping); a valid uninterrupted booster may not restart that wait. The final certificate has a separate 10-day EU entry window. These windows overlap: they are not a guaranteed total schedule. From an unlisted country, testing and a 3-month post-blood-draw wait can make preparation 4+ months.
Vet exam/certificate service: approximately $350–$550+ per pet* based on published Issaquah Veterinary Hospital and Dash Vet examples, not a Czech-route quote. Inclusions differ; consultation, vaccines, microchip, laboratory work and USDA endorsement may be extra. USDA endorsement for a US-to-Czech certificate not requiring tests is currently $38 per certificate. Transport, crate and handling are additional: request a route-specific written quote; no verified Czech-route total is available.
The official Czech sources reviewed do not identify a blanket dog-breed entry ban; that is not confirmation that every breed or animal will be accepted. Check your specific breed with the Czech State Veterinary Administration and each carrier. Snub-nosed breeds can face airline restrictions. Other species, commercial movements, more than five pets and pets travelling separately from their owner need separate checks.

Your checklist
The overview. Each step is explained below, with official sources. Last checked October 15, 2026.
- 1.Check that your work is a trade, not a separately licensed profession (doctor, nurse, lawyer, public-school teacher). If it needs re-certification, plan for exams in Czech before you can earn from it.
- 2.Confirm a separate immigration route for each family member and the spouse's work rights: nationality and the exact permit type matter.
- 3.Find out which of the 4 trade types it is, and whether you must prove a qualification.
- 4.Order an FBI background check (a US criminal-record report) and get it apostilled: an apostille is an official certificate that makes a US document valid abroad. Then have it and any diplomas translated into Czech by a court-certified translator. What is an apostille?
- 5.Arrange a Czech address (lease or owner's consent) for your business seat and housing.
- 6.Register the trade licence (živnostenský list). The fee is CZK 1,000.
- 7.Show proof of funds (bank statements proving you can support yourself; money you keep, not a fee) of at least CZK 156,500. Verify the current figure.
- 8.Book an appointment at the Czech embassy or consulate for your state, and give fingerprints in person.
- 9.Buy travel health insurance once the visa is approved, then collect the visa from the same embassy.
- 10.Register with the foreign police (the immigration office of the Czech police) within 3 working days of arrival.
- 11.Register for tax, social security (ČSSZ) and health insurance, and pay the monthly advances.
- 12.Renew the residence permit every 2 years or less. After 5 years: permanent residence (A2 Czech). Later: citizenship (B1 Czech).
Professional licences: if your job is regulated (healthcare, law, teaching, engineering, licensed trades), whether you must re-certify, sit exams, or retrain depends on where your original qualification was earned. Non-EU qualifications rarely get automatic recognition. Confirm with the profession's licensing body in your destination before you move.
What it really costs
All prices are estimates. Even official fees change, and private prices vary by provider, date and family size. Always get current figures and written quotes before you budget.
Every line is either an official fee or an estimate based on the published data described under it. We only link to official government sources; private price data is described but not linked. Where there is no comparable price, request a quote. Amounts are in the source currency; historical prices are not current offers, and this is not an all-in family budget.

New to visas? Start here
If you have never moved abroad before, these are the basic ideas the rest of this guide uses.
A visa is permission from a country's government to enter and stay for a specific purpose. As a US citizen you can visit Czechia for up to 90 days as a tourist without one, but you cannot live or work there without one.
This guide covers the long-term visa for business: the route for people who want to live in Czechia and work for themselves (self-employed), for example as a freelance designer or consultant.
A visa and a residence permit are different. The long-term visa lets you enter and live in Czechia for up to a year. The residence permit (a card from the Ministry of the Interior) lets you stay longer and is renewed every few years.
To use this route, you first register a trade licence: the Czech registration for self-employed work. Not every job counts; see "What a trade licence actually is" below.
Each family member (spouse, children) needs their own visa application. Pets need their own health paperwork.
Don't quit your job, sell or give up your home, take children out of school, ship your belongings or pets, or book non-refundable travel until the visa is approved and in your passport. Visas can be refused or delayed; see "If your visa is refused" below.
All prices in this guide are estimates unless marked Official. Official fees also change; always confirm with the government source.
Before committing: your family's move plan
Use these decision points before paying deposits, quitting your job, selling your home or booking non-refundable travel. This is a planning sequence, not an official processing timetable.
| Decision | What to confirm | Who to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Can both adults earn? | Exact profession, recognition route, Czech-language requirements and the spouse's work rights for the intended permit | Profession's authority and Ministry of Interior |
| Can everyone relocate together? | Each person's visa category, documents, appointment availability and how different decision dates affect your travel | Consulate handling each application |
| Will healthcare be covered? | Public-insurance eligibility for each person; otherwise private cover, exclusions, start date and full premium | Public insurer or licensed private insurer |
| Where will the children study? | Place availability, enrolment documents, language support, travel distance and any school charges | Local municipality and prospective school |
| Can the pets take this itinerary? | Origin-country paperwork, vaccination sequence, carrier approval, transit requirements and onward travel | Official veterinary authority, relocation-experienced vet and airline |
| What cash is needed before departure? | Document costs, insurance, housing deposits, moving quotes and funds that must remain available for the visa | Consulate, landlord and service providers |
For each adult and child, keep a separate application file: passport, intended visa category, relationship documents, authentication and translation requirements, accommodation evidence, insurance decision and consulate instructions. Ask which originals are required and which documents have validity limits before ordering replacements.

What a trade licence actually is
A trade is a type of self-employed work that the Czech government lists by name in its Trade Licensing Act. Examples: a freelance graphic designer, a web developer, an electrician or a hairdresser. To work as one, you register a trade licence (živnostenský list, often called "živno"), which makes you a self-employed person (OSVČ in Czech). Some trades need only registration (the graphic designer); others need proof of training (the electrician). Doctors, nurses, lawyers and state-school teachers are not trades at all: they are regulated professions with their own approval process.
| Type | What you must prove | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Free (volná), 80 fields | Nothing beyond the general conditions | Example: Sarah, a freelance graphic designer. Also IT and software, marketing, translation, consulting, e-commerce, graphic design |
| Craft (řemeslná), ~41 fields | Apprenticeship certificate, relevant school-leaving exam, or enough practical experience | Example: Mike, an electrician (must prove training). Also plumber and heating, hairdresser, bricklayer, baker, butcher |
| Professional (vázaná), ~35 fields | A specific professional qualification set by law | Example: an accountant offering bookkeeping services. Also tour guide, geological work, psychological counselling |
| Concession (koncesovaná), 21 fields | Qualification plus state approval | Example: a taxi driver (needs state approval). Also road transport, firearms, explosives |
Trade licences are issued under Act No. 455/1991 Coll. (the Trade Licensing Act). The annexes to the Act list every trade.
Every applicant must meet the general conditions: full legal capacity and a clean criminal record (bezúhonnost).
Which jobs qualify and which don't
Freelance knowledge work (developers, designers, writers, translators, consultants, online sellers) usually falls under the free trade. It is the simplest route.
Trade register (RŽP): types of trades Trade Licensing Act 455/1991 (MPO, consolidated 2026)
Electricians, plumbers, hairdressers and other crafts are craft trades. A US certificate isn't automatically accepted: you need a Czech vocational exam or a qualified responsible representative. See "Can you keep doing your job?"
Trade Licensing Act 455/1991 (MPO, consolidated 2026) MPO: recognition of qualifications for trades
Doctors, nurses and other health workers cannot work under a trade licence. They must pass a Czech-language approbation exam (the state exam that licenses foreign-trained health workers) first.
Ministry of Health: recognition of qualifications Ministry of Health: approbation exams
Lawyers, public-school teachers, architects, auditors and other regulated professions need recognition from their profession's authority or chamber, not a trade licence.
Teachers can still teach privately (e.g. language tutoring or courses) under a free trade. Teaching in a state school is a regulated profession.
MŠMT: list of regulated professions Trade register (RŽP): types of trades
Are US and other foreign qualifications accepted?
There is no automatic recognition for US qualifications. Each document is assessed, and it must be authenticated and translated.
The EU's mutual-recognition system doesn't apply to US citizens. You use the procedure for your specific profession or trade.
US public documents (diplomas, FBI check) need an apostille (an official certificate that makes a US document valid abroad), then a translation into Czech by a court-certified translator.
What is an apostille? →Ministry of Foreign Affairs: business visa requirements RŽP: foreign applicants & criminal record
For craft and professional trades, you prove your qualification to the trade office with these documents. Local offices decide whether your evidence is enough.
Trade Licensing Act 455/1991 (MPO, consolidated 2026) MPO: recognition of qualifications for trades
High-school and vocational diplomas can be formally recognised (nostrified) by the Education Ministry. This can include an exam in Czech, because the US has no equivalence treaty with the Czech Republic.
Nostrifying (officially recognising) a university degree confirms its academic level only. It does not by itself give you the right to practise a regulated profession.
Step-by-step application
1. Get the trade licence first. You need a Czech business address, your criminal record and, for regulated trades, proof of qualification. File the Single Registration Form (JRF) at any trade office (in person or by proxy).
Standard initial trade-notification fee: CZK 1,000. A subsequent notification costs CZK 500 regardless of how many trades are notified together; do not add CZK 500 for each simultaneous trade. Check the trade office's current filing options and fees.
2. Proof of accommodation: a lease or the owner's certified consent.
3. Proof of funds: 50 times the subsistence minimum, which is CZK 156,500 based on the 2023 figure. Check the current amount before applying.
4. Apply in person at the Czech embassy or consulate for your state (the main embassy is in Washington, D.C.). Bring your passport, application form (purpose: business), photos, trade licence, accommodation, funds and criminal record. Fingerprints are taken there.

How long until you get an answer
These are the legal deadlines the authorities must decide within. They are not guarantees: the clock can stop while they wait for documents from you, and getting an embassy appointment can take extra time before this starts.
| Application | Legal decision deadline | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term visa for business (self-employment) | 90 days; up to 120 days in particularly complex cases | Filed at the Czech embassy or consulate |
| Long-term visa for family purposes | 90 days; up to 120 days in complex cases | Filed at the Czech embassy or consulate |
| Family reunification residence permit | Generally 270 days if filed abroad; 60 days if filed in Czechia | Embassy, or Interior Ministry office in Czechia |
| Most long-term residence permits filed in Czechia (incl. business) | 60 days | Interior Ministry office in Czechia |
Deadlines come from §169t of the Foreigners Act and the Interior Ministry's time-limits table.
Act 326/1999 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners (official e-Sbírka text) Ministry of Interior (IPC): processing time limits
Plan for the longest time in the range, plus waiting for an appointment and collecting the visa. Keep your current job, home and school places until you have the visa in your passport.
If your visa is refused
The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused: it pays for processing your application, not for the visa itself.
You get a written refusal notice that states the reason. Read it carefully: the instructions on it (where and how to respond) take priority over this guide.
Ministry of Interior (IPC): new assessment of a visa refusal
Long-term visa refused: you can ask for a 'new assessment of the reasons' (nové posouzení důvodů neudělení víza). It must be in writing within 15 days of receiving the refusal, sent to the authority that decided (usually the Ministry of the Interior). The law gives the ministry 60 days to decide on it.
Ministry of Interior (IPC): new assessment of a visa refusal Act 326/1999 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners (official e-Sbírka text)
In that new assessment you cannot add facts you left out of the original application; it only checks whether the refusal was correct. Getting your application complete the first time matters.
Ministry of Interior (IPC): new assessment of a visa refusal
Court: the law excludes refusals of these long-term visas (and the new assessment) from ordinary court review, so the new assessment is usually your only formal challenge.
Act 326/1999 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners (official e-Sbírka text)
Residence permit refused (for example a renewal, or a family permit): you can appeal within 15 days of receiving the decision, filed with the office that decided. A separate commission decides the appeal. After that, a court case is generally possible within 30 days.
Ministry of Interior (IPC): appeals Act 326/1999 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners (official e-Sbírka text)
Can you simply apply again? No official source we found states a general waiting period, or guarantees you can reapply straight away. Fix the reason for the refusal first, and ask the embassy or an immigration lawyer before reapplying; you pay the fee again.
Ministry of Interior (IPC): new assessment of a visa refusal
If your application is rejected as 'inadmissible' (for example filed in the wrong way), it counts as never filed and the fee is returned. That is different from a refusal.
Grounds the law lists for refusing a visa (§56) include: missing the interview or not supplying requested documents; false statements or forged documents; doubts that you can support yourself; signs you will misuse the visa; no required health insurance; a criminal record; immigration violations in the past 5 years; and sham arrangements such as a fake marriage or business. This is the legal list, not a ranking of how often each happens.
Act 326/1999 Coll. on the Residence of Foreigners (official e-Sbírka text)
Visa fee: not refunded after a refusal.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs: visa fees (no refund on refusal)
After arrival, insurance and renewal
Register with the foreign police within 3 working days of arrival (hotels do this for you). If you hold a visa to collect a residence permit, go to the Ministry of the Interior within 30 days.
Your long-term residence permit for business lasts up to 2 years and can be renewed while you keep trading.
Register for tax, social security and health insurance. The trade office's single form can pass your details on.
RŽP: foreign applicants & criminal record Czech Social Security (ČSSZ): self-employed overview
Social insurance: ČSSZ describes relief from regular advances for qualifying people who start or restart after 31 December 2024 and were not self-employed in the preceding five calendar years. Relief covers the starting and following calendar years, not the annual insurance liability. Confirm eligibility, exceptions and the current minimum with ČSSZ; do not budget a blanket first-year exemption.
ČSSZ: social-insurance advances and starting-business relief
Public health-insurance minimum advance for eligible self-employed people: CZK 3,306/month in 2026. Confirm eligibility first: a non-EU business visa and self-employment alone do not automatically admit you to public insurance.
VZP: minimum health insurance advances VZP: healthcare for foreigners
Every year: an income tax return plus annual summaries for ČSSZ and your health insurer. These reset next year's advances.
Can you keep doing your job?
A trade licence is only a registration. It does not let a doctor, nurse, lawyer, engineer, electrician or hairdresser practise on their US qualification. US qualifications are not covered by the EU's mutual-recognition rules, so many professionals must retrain or pass exams in Czech first. Some work outside their field in the meantime.
Doctors, dentists and pharmacists with non-EU qualifications: ask the Ministry of Health which recognition and approbation procedure applies to you. Degree recognition, Czech-language examinations and supervised practice may be required. Get written confirmation of the sequence and costs before relying on healthcare income; there is no verified all-in retraining duration or budget in this guide.
Ministry of Health: approbation exams IPVZ: approbation exam FAQ (pass rates)
Nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and other health workers: also need an approbation exam and proof of Czech. The application fee is CZK 500.
Lawyers: a US bar licence doesn't let you practise Czech law. The Czech Bar's recognition exam costs CZK 12,500. Americans can't use the EU 'established lawyer' route.
Engineers and architects: you can't sign Czech building designs without authorisation from the Czech chamber, which can include a differential exam and a professional exam in Czech on Czech building law.
Electricians, plumbers, hairdressers and other crafts: there is no automatic route for a US certificate. You either pass a Czech vocational qualification exam, or appoint a qualified 'responsible representative' who holds the licence for your business.

Works without retraining: freelance IT, design, writing, translation, consulting, marketing and online selling, which are free trades.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate attached to a US public document so it is accepted abroad. It confirms the official's signature and seal, not what the document says. Czechia accepts apostilles (no embassy legalisation needed).
Birth, marriage and divorce certificates: apostilled by the Secretary of State of the state that issued them (e.g. Florida $10, New York $10, California $20).

After the apostille, a Czech court-certified translator translates the document and the apostille.
Bringing your spouse and children
A long-term visa for family purposes, a residence permit for family purposes and a family reunification residence permit are distinct routes with different eligibility and work rules. Ask the consulate and Interior Ministry which route each spouse or child can use; do not assume a later switch is automatic.

Funds: 15 × the monthly subsistence minimum plus 2 × for each further month (e.g. CZK 78,250 for 6 months at the 2023 rate). Children need half.
Processing: the legal deadline is 90 days, up to 120 in complex cases (a family reunification permit filed abroad: generally 270 days). There's no way to speed it up. See "How long until you get an answer".

Work rights: family-purpose visas and family-purpose residence permits do not themselves give free labour-market access, whereas a family reunification residence permit does. Separate grounds can also give access: IPC lists US nationals among eligible nationalities. Confirm the spouse's nationality and exact valid residence status before concluding that a work permit is needed. Free labour-market access is not professional recognition.

Health insurance for the whole family
Before the visa: every applicant needs travel medical insurance with at least €400,000 cover for the whole stay.
For a non-EU self-employed newcomer, a business visa or self-employment alone does not establish public-insurance eligibility. VZP lists qualifying grounds such as permanent residence, qualifying Czech employment and applicable European or treaty rules. Get your own eligibility confirmed in writing; if you do not qualify, arrange appropriate commercial insurance.
VZP: healthcare for foreigners VZP: minimum health insurance advances
Children under 18 with a long-term residence permit: automatically in public insurance since January 2024. Not on a long-term visa, only once they have the permit.
Assess the spouse separately: if there is no qualifying public-insurance basis, request appropriate commercial cover. Several Czech insurers sell policies for foreigners; confirm that the exact policy meets your visa or residence requirements, including comprehensive cover where required. Ask about pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, exclusions, reimbursement and cancellation. A cheaper basic policy is not necessarily sufficient. We do not endorse a provider.

Housing
Average asking rents per m² (estimate, based on a published rent index): Prague CZK 425 (Q4 2024), Brno CZK 390 and Ústí nad Labem CZK 221 (Q2 2026). Central Prague and new buildings cost more.
Expect to pay up front: up to 3 months' deposit, first month's rent, and about 1 month's rent + VAT to an agency.
For the visa, every family member needs proof of accommodation: a lease, or the owner's consent with an officially certified signature. Ask your landlord early.
Moving your belongings
No duty or VAT on your household goods (including your car) when you move your residence from outside the EU, if: you lived outside the EU for 12 months in a row, and you owned and used the goods for at least 6 months before moving. You request this relief in the customs declaration.
Czech Customs: moving your residence Czech Customs FAQ: personal belongings
Not covered: commercial vehicles, tobacco and alcohol.
A full-service mover packs, ships, clears customs and delivers. Shipping usually takes 3–12 weeks (estimate, based on published mover information). See the cost table for the 3 options and get 2–3 written quotes.
Bringing your pets
Preparation: weeks to months* depending on existing records and flight availability. From the continental US, allow at least 21 days after a first rabies vaccination (after microchipping); a valid uninterrupted booster may not restart that wait. The final certificate has a separate 10-day EU entry window. These windows overlap: they are not a guaranteed total schedule. From an unlisted country, testing and a 3-month post-blood-draw wait can make preparation 4+ months.
USDA APHIS: pet travel to the Czech Republic Czech State Veterinary Administration: pets from non-listed countries European Commission: bringing a pet from a non-EU country
European Commission: bringing a pet from a non-EU country Your Europe: pet passports
* All prices and preparation times are estimates, not a quote or guaranteed departure date. Confirm exact prices and timing with a veterinarian experienced in pet relocation, the official veterinary authority, and your airline or pet transport provider. Vet visits, vaccines, microchips, certificates, endorsement, crates, flights, transit and onward travel may be charged separately.
From the US: microchip, rabies vaccine, 21-day wait, EU health certificate from a USDA-accredited vet, USDA endorsement with an original ink signature, arrive within 10 days.
Airlines: rules differ a lot. Some US airlines don't carry pets in the hold on transatlantic routes; some European airlines do, often with limits for snub-nosed breeds (e.g. pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats). Crates must meet the airline's rules. Check with your airline before buying tickets.
Pet relocation companies (paid services) can handle the paperwork, flights and customs for you. Private pet-jet services also exist that let large dogs fly in the cabin. We don't recommend or link to any company; ask your vet for experienced names.
Not leaving from the US? Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore follow the same rules as the US (no titer test).
From a country not on the EU list: a rabies titer test at least 30 days after vaccination, at an EU-approved lab, then a 3-month wait from the blood draw before entry.
Czech State Veterinary Administration: pets from non-listed countries European Commission: bringing a pet from a non-EU country
After arrival: register your dog with your city and pay the yearly fee. A Czech vet can issue an EU pet passport for travel within the EU.

Register for tax, social security and health insurance.
Before choosing a bank, request its current non-resident or newcomer account requirements, accepted identity and address documents, monthly fees and appointment process. Requirements have not been independently verified here; do not assume every bank accepts the same documents.
Enrol children in school, register your dog, and in Brno register for the waste fee (CZK 900 per person per year).
Driving
A US licence plus an International Driving Permit works while you're a visitor.
Once you have a residence permit, you must exchange your licence within 3 months. US licences often don't qualify for a straight exchange, so you may have to take a Czech driving test.
Taxes in brief
You're usually a Czech tax resident after 183 days in a calendar year.
Flat-rate tax option for the self-employed: one monthly payment covering income tax, social and health insurance. Band I CZK 9,984/month (Jan–Jun 2026), Band II CZK 16,745, Band III CZK 27,139. Sign up by 12 January.
